The Ancient Paths

This book wont be found on the best seller list as it has some heavy going.  It is a history of the Gauls, Celts and Druids and the fact that they had a complicated system of roads, towns and sites.  It seems that a lot of credit given the Romans when they conquered France, Spain and England was due to previously established networks.  The Druids passed all their knowledge on verbally, so a lot of their legacy was lost and also absorbed into later religions.  It is always interesting when you come across something you have a connection to eg he was describing a siege at a Roman hill fort called Maiden's Castle and how aerial views show the layout to be an earlier Celtic one.  This author rode a bike all over Europe looking for pre-roman sites. We found Maiden's Castle last year and walked up thru the maze of earth walls to find a small church. This seems to back up the theory that once a site is established people will still gather there.
