I met Loretta Barnard in Tassie about 45 yar ago and have kept in touch. One of the activities we did was go to her son's music shows in the Melbourne Jazz club (now closed). Her father is a well known musician Bob Barnard and she has written a book exploring the family musical connections of Australian entertainers. She asks one main question , 'Is music passed down thru the genes?' My answer is no and it is just plain hard work, like anything else successful but it does help if others in the house can play. One of the stories was about Graeme and Roger Bell who formed a band with such songs as Swanston Street Shamble from the 1940's. A good read.
