Photo Distribution

We had one last go to clear the boxes this morning. I have already sent copies of this archive, as scanned digitalia, however the original source material was kept. So between brisk walking sessions and restaurant lunches and morning brunches there was a final 2 hour effort to divide and conquer.  In the end there were seven major piles and three lesser piles and a bin full of photos and frames.  Now we still have to bag it and tag it and send it on its way.  There is still the matter of the musings, memoirs, scribbles, the writings and the notes, which permeated all the boxes, folders, drawers and envelopes.  I have scanned a huge amount of these papers so far but another large batch was uncovered.  A lot has been done and we had Julie's fruit cake to keep us going.

Reframed

The large format picture frame has been rather neglected in the last few years. There are two trips represented on there and the European one was as much as six years ago, which shows our lack of travel lately. I have stripped out those ones from 2018 but left the Hawaii lot from 2000. I printed up to eight photos last week from our tour of the Pacific but when I cleared the previous older frames you could tell there is a large weight difference in the quality of the photo paper I used back then compared to what I printed on last week.  I was using up older stocks of A4 photo paper but maybe that is why it is left over becuase it is light weight.  I thought we had a guillotine for trimming some of these but had to use precise scissoring for cutting down the margins. I still replaced seven photos so hopefully they wont warp and fade over time. Maybe we have to travel some where more up market than PNG, sooner rather than later.

Youngest Bicycle ride ever

We heard a story that we hadn't heard before where 96 yar ago someone went for a bike ride and she was minus 10 hours old. It happened at Geelong when Aunty Patty's father, who had just finished playing a football match got his wife dinky style on a bicycle ride across to his mother's house asap as she was having contractions, after which Patty arrived, home birth style at her Grandmother's house.  The story came about when we visited with a packet of photos that had no explanation.  Some she knew about and others not.

Back to Cool

Not for Debbie that is.  I dropped her off at the Gull bus at around 7:00am and she will be heading to high 20's low 30's for a few days.  In the meantime I have a large pot of pumpkin soup she made for me which must mean its back to cold again.  We did get to try out the replacement umbrella last week ,as last years has succumbed to the elements. This one is a bit bigger and stronger in its rigging.  I have continued thru the Cincotta photo book and found some more Williamstown. I also found Heide Austin's name in very small print at the back of the book, meaning she was one of the pre publishing orderers that got her name printed.

Negativity

Working thru the next stack of photos, it is a mixed batch of a few colour but mostly B&W and negatives. However somewhere along the line there has been fire damage.  I noticed just a few photos yesterday that were burnt around the edges. Today I found the worst negatives that I have seen.  Buckled and bubbled due to heat and others just melted.  I wonder how many were destroyed. I have seen some of these negatives as quite good positives, so they must have been stored elsewhere.  I gave the negs a go anyway and as usual there are just a few that I have never seen before.

Country Living

I added another 150 photos to the scanned list this morning and I am having trouble recognising anyone from this old chocolate tin that was crammed full.  There are hints that these Clancy ancestors hunted and fished in and around the upper reaches of the Yarra.  There are trips to the snow and work being done with grapes and some drinking at the Launching Place Hotel.  I can see Bernie Clancy in some,  amongst an array of other characters.

I think that is Bernie Clancy unloading grapes

Late Finds

We are gearing up to handover original photos and USB's of photos in the next week or so. Yesterday I was poking around looking for documents and uncovered a mixed bag of more photos, must be a few hundred. I spent 2 hours scanning a huge bag full.  There are negatives as well and some more frames which I will look at tomorrow. There are  photos I have no idea about, both B&W and colour.  I do know something of these three. The 'Debbie Protrait'  I think is destroyed. I could be wrong but I remember Paul Stork wasn't happy with it.  The 'Laura  Relay Run'  came from a newspaper photographer and the 'Debbie Trophy Holder' was also about running at the Coburg Little Athletics. That has to be the highest pedestal I have seen.

Seven Neat Piles

The division of photos into piles has been completed or I thought it had, but it seems some fine tuning needs to be done whatever that is.  In any case it is getting close and maybe we will finally have the lounge area cleaned up a bit.  Also on the subject of deceased estates, the Gowanbrae people do not seem to be to active in their sale of the unit.  We checked the Village's own web page and the unit is not listed there for sale.  We have been told it is on numerous websites but cannot find it. Also there has not been too much response to emails so far.  They have managed to string out the process for the six months of extra payments but now that that has ended, they still seem to be slack.

PhotoMania

I am copying the scanned photos six times to different USB thumb style drives. I found an extra 1500 photos not included in the previous tally, as I had worked on a box full at Williamstown using a second scanner there.  The fruits of my olive picking came home with us in a big jar yesterday from the Taylors.  It was part of the haul that Anna had processed some months back.  We will most likely wait til Summer to open the lid.  I have also unloaded the video from the Bundoora Farm. It was a bit overcast but the below clip shows the style of the place.

Photo Scan End

It has taken 8 months but I have come to the end of the photo scanning project.  There will be some duplication along the way as this really started 10 yar ago when I was getting Beryl's  camera unloaded and sending them off to the photo shop.  Then there were the albums I was given to scan, a few at a time over some years and finally there is the section where everything else that could be found in the unit has now been scanned.  That includes all frames, albums, packets, negatives and loose piles.  There are around 17,000 photos in these folders requiring 7Gb of space. There is no organisation of them.  When you get a copy, good luck trying to navigate your way thru.   The last few days were spent on negatives and todays were those tiny thumbnail ones.  I scanned them at a large resolution of 1200.  Now I have to get copies onto USB drives.

Photo Finish

There has been a big push to get things done before we go to QLD tomorrow.  The Pure Bookkeeping stuff has been over the top, as usual before we go away.  For some reason it has been more intense this time around and it's only for a 12 day absence, not like the five weeks that we have done before COVID.  So after all the wee hours efforts, there will be product announcements today and product launches while we are away.  These are the building blocks that will be used for a revisiting of Pure Bookkeeping in the United Kingdom and also for the first foray into New Zealand.  I have been going at the photo scanning for longer periods as well and as of this morning the last of the printed photos are scanned, except for those in frames.  There is also a large stack of negatives to work thru so I am not quite at the end yet.

I think this is Woolley St?

This definitely is but a few years later.

Three Generations

Another day another 100 photos added to the ever increasing set of files that are building up here. The scanner was running hot before I got this lot converted to bits and bytes.  I have found a shoe box which seems to be in six parts one for each child.  So today's lot were in the Debbie section.  I think the Laura photo was after a dance concert she was in.  The Debbie one is during a ride to QueensCliff where there were dress ups inside the fort.  The three generations one might be from a retirement village party.

Cherub Box

I spent hours tidying up some space here for the old machine and the new machine.  I have moved the old machine backwards to the map drawers. Separating the old and new docking stations was a tangled web.  There are ten cables protruding from the new dock as it is, and I have not plugged in everything.  My daily goal of spending at least an hour on the photo scanning project has been laking lately so I spent two hours on it this afternoon. I found a small box at the bottom of a big box which is jammed with photos and a mixed box it is.  Black & whites from 80 years back, some negatives and looks like some modern digital prints as well.

Telegrams

I opened an Old Gold chocolates box and there was a roll of telegrams inside.  Now for those who are only digitally inclined, teleograms were your fast way to get a message thru on the same day.  You still had to queue up at the post office, not just whip out your phone and send an SMS.   These were all sent on the 31st Jan 1953.  I am not sure how some of them are written and some are typed.  To scan or not to scan?  I am digitising all the photos so what's another 23 files.  Where are these people now?  eg Mr & Mrs Tudor??

Negatives

I got out one packet of the negatives which was an old Kodak envelope that opened into two pockets. Both sides had a wad of negatives. Is that the cumulative name for many negatives? It was more like a wallet hence wad of negatives.  When the final tally of photos comes due there is going to be some duplication, as when I scanned the first two negs, one I had seen before and the other I have not.  So in case something is missed I am doing them all as they turn up.  There was another in there featuring a bike ride. Who would have thought.

Ugg Day

I just had to get out the Ugg boots this morning as I made the mistake of having cold feet when I went to bed last night.  It has been hailing on and off today. The mini heaters are working ok so far and if they stave off todays 12° maximum then that will prove it.  Any one who made it to Brisbane this week despite more flioght cancellations, has timed it well to escape this blast.  I retrieved one box of stamps and three boxes of photos from Willie yesterday, as I had run out of both here at Clifton Springs.  The photo boxes are large and inside one was a shoe box. That box seems to be mostly negatives. I think it might take a month just to get thru the shoebox.  One of the envelopes said Debbie & Neil's wedding but inside were strips of negatives which I have never seen anything the like of.  They are tiny, maybe 10 mm x 20mm with no way to hold them still so I just weighted them down, which worked OK.

Rain Day Scan Day

Finished off another pile of negatives and photos given that it looks uninviting outside. I am keen to check out our beach after the Easter hordes. I don't think there were that many who ventured down there due to the bad weather.  There may be a lot of washed up stuff.  As with most of these below there is no indication of where or when and is a complete mixed bag of stuff.  You can see how negatives are prone to scratching.

Data Recovery

I have successfully recovered all the data that went missing a couple of months ago when my latest NAS disk got a problem and would not startup.  This exercise has cost $1000 for the recovery and also the cost of a new drive not to mention the cost of the old drive. The broken drive was more sophisticated having a printed circuit board in the enclosure as well as the disk.  Strictly speaking, when the board caught fire this in turn sent a shock thru the disk drive.  The recovery centre is an operating theatre quality clean space. The disk is disassembled in the pristine environment and each platter in the drive is mounted individually, spinning them up and reading off anything that can be found.

Back in the day I worked with RAID systems, where multiple disks were mounted as one unit containing mirrored copies and striped copies of all the data.  If one disk broke, just take it out put in an identical drive and the data would be rebuilt from other drives.  I have a 20 year old drive from the BACS days which is still working and contains two mirrored disks but I have not seen anything like it since.  These days you rent disk space in the cloud which all have full RAID protection, so there is no way any of that will be lost.

Five different trips were recovered  including  to Brisbane, Cairns and Port Fairy.  All the Roberts Slide reels that I rescanned are now all back again, as well as two years of what I call general daily photos and might include sunsets, beaches or bike rides etc. These are a few of the photos that were recovered.

Photo Box

There are showers today which makes it a good day for photo scanning.  I got a photo box out of the pile which is like a mini set of drawers but holds photos. There are four drawers but also a loose pile at the bottom.  They are a mixed lot built up over time with a bit of travel, birthdays and family.  The one of the Liberator Bomber is good. I worked right next to this hanger for years but never went inside.
