The theme in this book has been repeated plenty of times. Travellers are thrown together for a period of time due to some unforseen problem. The one I remember is Gander in Canada. Thirty Eight planes were diverted there for five days after 9/11. So that meant 7,000 extra people in a town of 9,000 but they did have a huge historical airport. Just as in the book they were forced to work it out. Trying to get your head around the characters in this book is the hard part, eg one of them only communicates in colour via their skin, so no need for vocal chords.
