Song of Kali

The sunshine is still here so I got some lawn mowing and edging done today as it is the green bins turn this week and we haven't mowed for a month.  Speaking of horror stories the above title is another of Dan Simmons novels that has won a heap of awards. He has a go at Stephen King for churning out trashy mass production stuff.  You don't need ghosts, zombies or monsters to write a horror genre yarn. Good old Dan sets his story in Calcutta and mainly just describes what you can see.  India is having a hard COVID time of it lately but I think they contribute a lot with their non cleanliness.  He tells of streets filled with garbage piled high and sewage running freely.  There are deliberately malformed beggars sitting in the puddles, some bathing, some peeing etc. Paul Stork told me once that he saw bodies gliding passed in the river, that was when he was there in the 80's and that was when this book was written. I could go on and I haven't even mentioned the missing character they are searching for in the story, who turns out to have leprosy, which conjures up a whole new nasty scene.  This book is cleverly written, don't read it.
