Air Show Volunteer
Just been talking with our neighbour across the way who has sold up and is moving on. We had a send off meal at Clifton Springs golf club. Turns out he worked three Avalon Air Shows as a volunteer building runways. He said his first show was the best in 2011 and then Air Services Australia took over in 2013 and it went down hill from there. The worst thing they did was give him and his mate some paddles without any training and sent them out to the end of the runway for 8 hours on a 40° day, no lunch, no water, as they had been completely forgotten about. He never volunteered again. It was a 10 week job building and dismantling the runways.

I have a few concerns with this story Neil! Runways are not temporary things that can just be built and torn down again. The only thing I can think of is the grass temporary runway they do open during the show but that is just a bit of mown grass. What did he say these runways were made of? Also, AirServices has never run the air show, so I'm not sure where he got that from!

ReplyDeleteYes they never ran it but they took responsibility for runways according to him.(h'es 80 something now) He spent weeks smoothing and leveling rock and dirt, driving cars at up to 150kph from one end to the other. Also lining the runways with markers and a particularly bright red pavilion they constructed in the exact centre of the grand stand for pilots to centre their aerobatics. A lot of time was spent just marking the perimeter of the runways with heavy bollards but jets were always blowing them so they had to go out and put them back.
DeleteOh yeah that sounds about right. Poor guy!
