Livy to his friends

Livy was born 59 BC and died 17 AD or thereabouts.    This book is really a collection of stories when Rome was more a city not an empire although these events are 300 yar after the founding of Rome.  They were always warring with the neighbours, they would raise an army, elect a supreme commander, he would appoint an officer for the cavalry and they would march off to the fight.  This was repeated time and again.  Livy always used the names of those involved such as Vectius Messius who gave a stirring speech to rally his soldiers.
